Biography

Alex S. Genshaft is a 5th year graduate candidate in the Shalek Lab interested in how communication between cells leads to changes systems-level behaviors. His research focuses on developing tools to probe the intra- and intercellular circuits that drive emergent phenotypes.

Alex grew up in Brooklyn, NY where he learned life’s most important facts like who makes the best pizza slice and how to ride the subway. After 18 years in the best city in the world, he moved to Philadelphia, PA to attend the University of Pennsylvania as a Vagelos Scholar in Molecular Life Sciences. There, he worked with Professor David W. Christianson studying terpene synthases and protein structure. He later graduated with B.A.s in Chemistry, Physics, and Biophysics and a M.S. in Chemistry. After college, he moved to Cambridge, MA to enroll in a Ph.D. program at the Department of Chemistry at MIT and work with Alex Shalek.
